About this Event

Fed up with only knowing how to do the most basic of embroidery stitches?

This Modern Sampler workshop is the another in our series where you learn some of the most popular embroidery stitches and different ways to apply them.

As we pass the dubious anniversiary our first year in lockdown, crafts and in-particular sewing are experiencing something of a revival. With this renaissance comes a new interest in embroidery and decorative stitching. At The Virtual Thread we have been repeatedly asked to teach more stitches in our workshops, we listened. So here it is the first modern sampler workshop.

The workshop, led by Jane Grimshaw, is a friendly and informal place for everyone from the novice stitcher to the seriously obsessed. We chat, we laugh, we make connections and have fun whilst creating samplers that will be the envy of the modern world.

In this class we will be covering amongst others stem stitch, couching and pinwheel flowers, as well as blanket stitch and feather stitch. You will also be taught how to block your embroidery after it is finished.

Jane is highly trained in the art of wielding needles and pins. She comes from a long line of tailors that goes back three centuries. When not delivering online sewing workshops to the discerning masses, Jane makes costumes for stage productions in London’s glamorous West End, for the likes of the Phantom of the Opera and Lion King. You’ll also have seen her work on many films and television series. Teaching is in Jane’s blood: she has taught pattern cutting and costume construction in higher education for more than 25 years.
